We relish the demands and discipline of newspaper design and in today’s fast changing media landscape a great looking, well crafted newspaper is more important than ever.
1 The Sunday Times In early 2017 the UK’s leading quality newspaper underwent a much-needed redesign which was carried out by editorial design experts Simon Esterson and Mark Porter. The rather dated looking old paper with its clunky typography and mish-mash of styles was replaced with a fresher and coherent design that is now a pleasure to read. I was called upon to advise on fonts and typography and I helped with the redesign of the TV and Radio listings pages of the Culture section which is now a vast improvement on the old version which had become rather trashy and unpleasant. Now they have a neat and tidy solution which feels much more considered yet is still bold when it needs to be – and is easier to navigate. You can read more about the redesign on my blog ↓
2 Norwich Evening News Norwich’s daily evening paper was extremely tired and old fashioned. It was given a complete design overhaul – modern fonts, new grid, dynamic page furniture and graphics and bold photography. Nick worked closely with the journalists to set up quick and easy to use templates and examples are shown below ↓
“I was the deputy editor of the Norwich Evening News during its redesign and I worked closely with Nick in dragging what was a rather tired looking old paper into the 21st century. Not only did Nick provide us with a fresh, lively and captivating design but Nick really understood the readers’ needs and he introduced deft little touches that brought the newspaper to life, along with some simple solutions such as re-thinking about how we cropped and edited pictures and about how our pages were structured. Nick thought carefully about solving the problems that we had with the old paper and he gave us a new design that worked hard for the reader rather than being just decoration.”
