The best magazines and newspapers – those with superb copy, design and pictures – are born when there is great teamwork and collaboration between designers, photographers, editors and clients. Over the years, Nick has had the privilege of working with some of the best photographers and illustrators in the industry – and working with stunning images makes a designer’s job so much easier. However, great pictures don’t just drop into a designer’s lap – there’s hard groundwork involved and it’s only those designers with a knack for selecting the most appropriate photographer or illustrator, together with an ability to construct a well written brief and provide canny art direction, that end up with the goodies they need.

Nick has commissioned and art directed the car photographer Alex P,  for many different shoots for Saab magazine and these wonderful pictures were shot at RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk.

This haunting photo of the Olympic rower, Richard Egington, was shot by the portrait photographer Harry Borden at the historic Leander Club in Henley, for the Rolls Royce magazine. Harry Borden has a simple and honest approach to his subjects and he has a knack of capturing the essence of their personalities. Nick first worked with Harry in the 1980s while at Campaign magazine.

An illustration can be a powerful way to capture an idea or theme. Here are some examples of different illustrators that we have commissioned and worked with. One of our favourites is Matthew Richardson and here he has helped bring alive a wordy feature for Odgers Berndtson Observe magazine about Chinese students studying overseas.

Melvyn Evans was commissioned to produce a map for a travel feature on Western Sweden for Saab magazine. His charming style, with echoes of 1950s children’sbook illustration, reflected the mood of the article.

An illustration of Mount Street in Mayfair by Sarah McMenemy for Carter Jonas estate agents. Sarah was commissioned to produce similar drawings for features on Marylebone and Chelsea.
